Matt & Kim - Let’s Go

Haters can hate, but I adore Matt & Kim. Their new album Lightning is exactly what I would expect of them. Not only is it super fun and catchy, it’ll just make you feel good. There’s something to be said for the simplicity they present with their music. Though I have to say that they are branching out a bit with loops and multilayering in a direction that I’m pretty happy with.

And, as always, they’re music video is fucking fantastic.

Amanda Palmer and The Grand Theft Orchestra - Do It With A Rockstar

Here we are, boys, girls, and everything else. The new Amanda Palmer, Theatre is Evil, is out.

And it fucking rocks.

Now, to be honest, I’m already a huge Amanda Palmer fan, but even if you have never heard of her, you need to listen to this album. For the first time, Amanda Palmer has recorded an album with a full band accompanying her and it’s truly amazing what she was able to produce.

Every song on this album has its own sound, and the tracks skip between different genres with an ease that’s hard to find in a lot of modern music. Whether it’s the shoegaze inspired soundcrush of the opening track Smile (Pictures or it Didn’t Happen), the 90s pop punk power chords of Want It Back, the Cure-like synths of Grown Man Cry, the 80s pop rock (and total My Sharona parody) of Melody Dean, the stripped down solo piano in the heartbreaking Bed Song, or… well, you get the idea, it’s all good and it’s all different. Do yourself a favour and buy this album. It’s worth having.

I also went to see her live a few days ago, and it was astounding. I’ve never seen someone with such natural stage presence. Various antics ensued. It was amazing. If you have the opportunity, go see her. Don’t even think about it. Buy a ticket. Damn.

I’ll stop gushing now. Go out there and listen to some music!

Yeasayer - Longevity

Yeasayer released a new album as well!! They’re going a bit further into their electronic side with this one, and some of the tracks would probably sound very at home in a club, but I think that it’s really good. I’ve been playing it non-stop at work. Excellent for walking down a sunny street early in the morning. And, as always, their music video is a little unsettling in the most awesome way.

Teen Daze - Treten

Teen Daze is a B.C. (yay!) based ambient/chillwave musician. The music that I’ve heard of his varies between being really tuned down or pretty damn dancey. I like it, it’s nice space out music. Plus, watch the music video if you enjoy scuba divers and dolphins.

David Byrne & St. Vincent - Who

Alright, I’m going to get this out of the way right now: I am not very familiar with The Talking Heads at all.

I know, I suck, moving along.

I really like this album. I’ve heard it hasn’t gotten the greatest reviews, but whatever! What do professional music reviewers know, right? I think the entire thing really captures… well, how weird both Byrne and Annie Clark (St. Vincent) are. (Anyone who’s been following me for a while knows my love of Clark’s work)

Listen to this album twice. You may not like it the first time, but it’ll grow on you. Their voices work together in the strangest way.

Also, this video rocks. Way to still have moves, David Byrne. You the man.

mewithoutYou - Cardiff Giant

So mewithoutYou’s new album came out finally! It is pretty good. As much as I hate to say it, the album’s not as memorable as some of their others, though it’s still very enjoyable. It’s nice to see them getting a bit back into their roots (February 1978 being a good example). They seem to be settling some of the different sounds they’ve experimented with in the past into a very interesting amalgamation.

Cardiff Giant is not only (in my opinion) one of the more stand-out tracks on the album, but also a pretty accurate summary of the feel of the album, though I highly encourage you to check it out in its entirety. It is a concept album, after all. One telling the story of a circus train that crashes, and the subsequent events surrounding the animals that were in the train. The story can be a bit hard to follow at times, but it’s definitely worth a listen. Check it out!!

DIIV - How Long Have You Known?

Tasty tasty shoegaze.

Interesting bit of trivia; since I started listening to this band, I couldn’t get over thinking that they sound an awful lot like a shoegazey version of Beach Fossils. Then I found out that DIIV is a side project of Zachary Cole Smith, a member of Beach Fossils. Apparently my ear is pretty good at picking out folks’ guitar work.

It is a combination of being both poppier and weirder than their previous work. I am enjoying it so far! Most of it is making me think of being in a club, but one filled with terrifying nightmare creatures and drunk hipsters.

The Protomen - Vengeance

I went to see The Protomen two nights ago! It was friggin’ amazing, save for some drunk idiot who kept trying to choke me/elbow me the entire night. At one point, their drummer got up, put his hands on my shoulders, and told me that if I took a swing at the guy he’d have my back. Is poke to them all after the show, they are super nice!

They played a bit more Queen than I’d’ve liked, but hey, can’t win ‘em all.

The xx - Angels

So you know when an indie band covers a popular hip-hop or R&B song, and it ends up sounding way better than the original? Well The xx are smart enough to forego that first step and just go right into making (what sounds to me like) hip-hop inspired, downtempo, heartbreaking indie music. This is the first track off of their second album, Coexist, and it is fantastic. Not a whole lot different than their first, other than maybe a bit less overall silence, but I have no problem with that. Check it out! Support the band! Buy it! I should probably do that too.

The Protomen - Light Up the Night

This band is so hilariously (and yet legitimately) awesome. They’re in the process of writing a three act rock opera inspired by the Megaman video games. And let me tell you, they make it sound EPIC. They’ve got two of the acts finished as separate albums. The first, self-titled, album leans more towards garage rock with maybe even a bit of progressive metal thrown in. And it was all recorded analog!

This song is from their second album, Father Of Death. The second album skips from genre to genre with incredible ease, with some amazing 80s power rock inspired tracks towards the end.

Their live shows are supposed to be incredible, too. Check ‘em out! But be warned, this rock opera ends as most operas do; which is to say, it’s gonna be a tragedy, folks…
